India’s interim head coach VVS Laxman has revealed one area of improvement for the teen batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after he was adjudged the player of the match and player of the series on the Zimbabwe tour.
Speaking at the post-series press conference, Laxman has stated that Sooryavanshi needs to work on his overall fitness, improving his fielding and catching efficiency on the field. Moreover, he praised the teen batter for showing fighting spirit on the field during the third T20I.
“The one area we want him to improve is his overall fitness. He’s a very young boy. He himself wants to get better in every aspect of the game. Even today, when he got injured [while attempting a diving catch running in from deep square leg], he still wanted to stay on the field. It was our physio who asked him to come off. That’s the eagerness and earnestness he has to contribute in every possible way to the team,” VVS Laxman said in the post-series press conference.
In the third T20I, India opted to bat first on a good batting wicket; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi amassed an 81-run knock off 49 balls with eight fours and four sixes with a strike rate of 165.31 as the visitors posted 192/5 in 20 overs.
In the second innings, Zimbabwe could score 157/7 in 20 overs, losing the game by 35 runs. Ryan Burl was the top scorer, racking up an unbeaten 54-run knock. Star Indian pacer Mayank Yadav scalped a three-wicket haul.
“I’m not surprised by the way this series has gone. He was disappointed not to get a hundred, but we told him it’s not going to be the first or the last opportunity he’ll get. He’s got a long career ahead, and he has the attitude and mindset to improve every day. I’m sure he will progress and break all the records at the international level. He’s got all the potential and ability to do that,” Laxman concluded.
